June ‘Ma’ Barker 1924 – 2025
June ‘Ma’ Barker, an indomitable figure in BC archery, was a cornerstone of the sport in Victoria for over half a century. Her dedication and passion have left an indelible mark, making her a beloved life member of both the SeaView Archers and the Victoria Bowmen. Known affectionately as ‘Ma’, she embodied the spirit of archery, bringing warmth, wisdom, and an unparalleled commitment to our sport and her community.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, June served as a frequent team coach for the BC Teams at the Canadian Archery Championships. Her coaching prowess spanned all levels of archers, from beginners to Olympians. Among her many protégés were John MacDonald, an Olympian whose skills were honed under her watchful eye, and Angela Cramer, a many times Canadian Champion and National Team member. June’s approach was always inclusive; she was known for her open-hearted willingness to help anyone, whether through seasoned encouragement or precise technical advice.
June’s legacy is one of dedication, mentorship, and community spirit. Her influence has shaped countless archers’ lives, fostering a love for our sport and a commitment to excellence. Even today, her teachings and her spirit live on in the hearts of those she mentored, making her a true legend in the field of archery in Victoria, BC, and Canada. Her unwavering support and tireless efforts have ensured that the flame of archery continues to burn brightly in the community she cherished so deeply.
